Every desktop or notebook or server is run by an Operating System - the low-level software that interacts with the hardware, including peripherals such as a mouse or a printer, as well as any apps that are present on the system. Any program input using a command line or a Graphical User Interface (GUI) is processed by sending an Application Program Interface (API) request to the OS. On a server, every single app runs within the parameters specified by the OS as well - priority, physical memory, processing time, etc. This is valid for both standard website scripts and server-side software like a media server. When a virtual server is set up on a physical one, there can be two independent Operating Systems, named guest OS and host OS, which means that you'll be able to set up a different software environment on a single machine.
Multiple OS in VPS Servers
If you pick one of our VPS server
plans, you'll have three different Operating Systems to select from - CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu. They are all Linux distributions and we offer them rather than offering just one OS, since the apps that you may want to run on the server may have specific requirements regarding the software environment. Each one of the three has some pros in terms of the available packages that you can eventually install, but what is common between them is that they're very stable and dependable and have vast communities that support them. The hosting Control Panel alternatives for the VPS accounts depend on your OS choice, so as to give you more flexibility. In case you order the virtual server with one OS and you need another one later, our tech support team can easily reinstall the VPS with the new one in a matter of minutes. We also offer the option to keep the Operating System on your server up-to-date weekly.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Servers
We offer three Operating Systems with our dedicated server
solutions - CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian. They are all different Linux distributions and we offer them not only because they are absolutely free and they won't increase the price of your new web server, but also because they are really secure and stable. Each of them is supported by a large community of web developers, so you'll be given the option to choose from many hundreds of software packages that you can install on your server in case the application that you would like to use has specific requirements. The Operating System will also determine what hosting Control Panel you can use as the Control Panels that we offer are compatible with particular OSs only and because we want to give you as much freedom as possible, we offer several OSs and multiple Control Panels. In case you choose a server with a given OS, we could change it upon request in the event that it turns out that you'll need another one. We could also keep your OS updated weekly as part of the additional Managed Services upgrade.
